Descriptif

This course introduces the relationship between political sciences, geopolitics, and information and communication technologies (ICT), drawing on foundational political sciences concepts (from Max Weber to Lucien Sfez). It delves into how ICT is impacting political landscapes, international relations, and the challenges posed by GenAI and the Cyber space, in an evolving information environment.

 

Objectifs pédagogiques

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Use a few Political Sciences concepts to analyze real-world case studies of ICT and geopolitics.
  • Assess the role of ICT in geopolitical strategies and international conflicts.
  • Understand the challenges of information/disinformation and surveillance in the digital age.

                      Programme détaillé

                      The course consists of ten 2-hour lectures, each focusing on a specific theme:

                      1. Foundational Concepts of Political Sciences: The lecture will draw upon fundamental political sciences concepts, starting with Weber's definitions of the State and the disenchantment of the World.

                      Use case: Climate change or GenAI/FacialRecognition.

                      1. Political Sciences X Realpolitik : Examining the different types of power (hard, soft) and the role of symbols. A Weberian prediction meeting a Sfezerian concept.

                       .               Use case: The Russian war in Ukraine and Desinformation Warfare. TBC

                      1. Political Sciences X Capitalism (& Geopolitics) : Students will be introduced to Max Weber, David Ricardo and Adam Smith most known theories. 

                       .               Use case : the post-Covid and Ukraine re-industrialization momentum, or the end of Ricardo and the Invisible Hand.

                      1. Internet X Physical World The Internet is very physical, not at all virtual. It is fiber optic cables that run across the world and the oceans. And at the end of the cables, we find data centers. This is also the best place to listen to others, to spy on them.

                      1. Internet X Cloud What is the Cloud ? How is AI cloud-based ? From hyperscale to the platformisation of distribution and global trade. While raising legitimate concerns in terms of concentration of the sector.
