Sociology is a discipline dedicated to the scientific study of society. From social relationships to cultural norms, or individual behaviours and beliefs, the study objects of sociologists may vary in size or nature, but sociology remains consistently defined by its concern with producing knowledge of society by scientific methods. This course aims to introduce the scope and basics of sociology, through a brief historical retrospective, thematic case studies and an introduction to field research. Sociology gives various tools to understand how social influences shape humans' actions, ways of thinking and feeling. Better knowing the social processes in which people are involved helps understand contemporary societal issues students may encounter in their future professional life. In addition to general sociological concepts, the course also focuses on more specific topics. Those include an introduction to sociology of cultural practices, social stratification, sex and gender, as well as sociology of science. For the latter, sociology also provides precious reflections to consolidate an approach of science more reflexive on its social determinants and effects.
