Descriptif

The course of Introduction to Science and Technology Studies (STS) aims to present the main contributions of human and social sciences to the technological innovation field. With several notions, ideas, theories and thier authors, and through case study work, we'll follow different societal implications of technological innovations. Furthermore, this scope is enlarged to understand the environmental, health and ethical issues through our relationship to "the living" involved into (bio)technological practices. 

To succed in case study analytical work, several methodological HSS aspects will be presented to the students

Objectifs pédagogiques

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Develop the ability to grasp contemporary issues related to technological innovation by taking into account not only their technical and scientific aspects, but also their relationship to human society and 'life'
  • To know main concepts of social sciences in their technological implications and to be able to appropriately use them in their argumentation
  • To develop critical thinking regarding technological determinism/solutionism
  • To identify broader societal issues within technological innovation cases 
  • To show analytical, conceptual and argumentative skills to underdstand sociotechnical controversies
