Environmental Chemistry
This course introduces the important aspects of environmental chemistry: sources, transport, reactions, effects, and fates of chemicals in the environmental compartments. It is designed to provide students a broad view of physical and chemical processes that control the dispersion of chemicals in the environment. The course introduces methodology and basic tools of environmental modeling in both porous media and open channels. It also focuses on the factors that influence biogeochemical cycles of key elements such as carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous but also of organic and metallic micro pollutants. The importance to take into account biogeochemical cycles when developing prevention strategies against hydrosystems pollution (artificial wetland buffer zone) and waste valorization bioprocesses will be emphasized through real cases study and field visits.
