PA - C8 - MEC661 : The law and ethic of Human enhancement

Descriptif

The law and ethics of human enhancement will explore complex ethical questions associated with biomedical engineering. Technologies used to cure diseases and alleviate human suffering can also be used to create "enhanced" human beings, leading to difficult ethical dilemmas. The course will explore some of the hard lessons learned from genetic engineering in the past, leading to today's prohibition of eugenics. We will explore the development of the brain-computer interface, use of AI in diagnosis and disease prevention, individualized medicine, and techniques for cognitive enhancement. We'll confront these new technologies with international texts on fundamental rights and bioethics, including the Nuremberg Code, the European Charter of Fundamental Rights, the Oviedo Convention and the Declaration of Helsinki. Students will have the opportunity to debate the theory of transhumanism, including Nick Bostrom's argument argument that "human nature is a work-in-progress, a half-baked beginning that we can learn to remold in desirable ways.
