PA - C8 - MEC658B : Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems

Descriptif

Mathematical models are increasingly used to investigate the behaviour of biological systems, at the core of a highly interdisciplinary topic connecting mathematical and physical sciences with biology and bioengineering.

The course will introduce key deterministic and stochastic mathematical approaches used at different biological scales or levels, including regulation of gene expression, cellular biology, organ function, organism physiology, or population dynamics. For each topic, the lecture will start from the biological background, build the model, present analytical and/or numerical methods to solve the model, and discuss model behaviour.

Objectifs pédagogiques

After the course, the student should know

- how to build a simple mathematical model to describe a biological system,

- the main classes of models used in mathematical biology,

- the main properties of their solutions,

- how to solve numerically these models,

- and how to compare the solutions with experimental data.
