Cours scientifiques - BIO_3F001_EP : Biology Practicals

Domaine > Biologie.

Descriptif

Prerequisite: BIO_2F001_EP and BIO_2S002_EP
The primary goal of the Biology practicals is to provide an overview of the most recent techniques to complement the practicals of BIO_2F001_EP and BIO_2S002_EP. During this course, students will participate in research projects in the École Polytechnique laboratories where they will learn some of the most advanced techniques in biology under the supervision of researchers.

Objectifs pédagogiques

During this course, students will:

  • Gain an understanding of the latest techniques and methodologies used in modern biological research.
  • Participate in hands-on research projects in laboratories.
  • Learn and apply advanced biological techniques under the guidance and supervision of experienced researchers.
  • Develop practical skills and technical proficiency in contemporary biological research.
  • Enhance their ability to work collaboratively in a research environment.

These objectives aim to ensure that students not only learn cutting-edge techniques but also apply them in a research setting, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

The assessment for the course BIO_3F001_EP will be based on several components designed to evaluate both practical and theoretical understanding of the subject matter. The evaluation structure is outlined as follows:

  1. Participation in Lab Work
Active participation in lab work is a key part of the evaluation process. Students are expected to be present and engaged in all lab sessions, as hands-on work is essential for mastering the techniques and concepts covered in the course.
  2. Written Report
Students will be required to submit a written report that summarizes the outcomes of their laboratory work. The report must be 10 pages long, excluding annexes such as graphs, tables, and additional data. The report should provide a clear analysis of the experiments conducted, including objectives, methodology, results, and discussion. Proper citation of sources and adherence to scientific writing standards will also be taken into account.
  3. Oral Presentation
Students will present their laboratory findings in an oral presentation lasting 15 minutes, followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer session.

In addition to the formal evaluations, there will be an informal feedback session at the midpoint of the course. This will provide students with guidance on their progress, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement. While this feedback will not be graded, it is an important opportunity to ensure students are on the right track before the final assessments.
