Cours scientifiques - CHE_1S001_EP : General Chemistry

Domaine > Chimie.

Descriptif

This course aims to give fundamental concepts in chemistry to provide a strong basis for the follow up courses of the Chemistry minor. The atomic structure, notion of orbitals, bonding within molecules, and intermolecular interactions will be discussed, exploring the molecular reactivity but also the implications to the properties at the macroscale and materials science. Spectroscopic methods will be prresented, conceptually and experimentally, including the construction of a spectrometer and a short analytical chemistry lab.

Objectifs pédagogiques

  • Theoretical outcomes

    • Describe a simple chemical system with the adapted nomenclature and vocabulary.
    • Identify relevant structural parameters at atomic and interatomic scale (bonding nature, charges, crystallographic structure …) for predicting simple physico-chemical properties.
    • Identify and apply appropriate spectroscopic techniques to address quantitative and qualitative analysis of a basic chemical structure (IR, UV-Vis).

    Experimental outcomes

    • Prepare and manipulate adequately solutes, solvents and solutions with a comprehension of the sources that impact accuracy and precision of the outcomes
