PA - C7 - MEC585 : Engineering computional solid mechanics

Domaine > Mécanique.

Descriptif

Engineering Computational Solid Mechanics is at the crossroad of four scientific disciplines and just as many application domains: Analysis, Maintenance, Production, and Design. In this course, we will focus on the design of structures or systems for mechanical applications.

Objectifs pédagogiques

The objectives of this course are to give the students:

  • An overview of design methods used to setup a sensible mechanical problem, a virtual experiment of sorts, from a very general needs expression given by a non-expert client.
  • The ability to choose, construct, and validate simple mechanical models based on a wide range of virtual experiment parameters, ranging from the type of analysis to perform, the choice of quantities of interest, the material models to implement, the loading conditions to apply, and the overall scale or fidelity level to adopt.
  • The ability to select and use appropriate open-source software to help setup, analyze, and post-process their virtual experimental.

      Programme détaillé

As part of this course, the students will:

      • Attend a short number of teaching sessions and practical activities where design and modelling methods will be taught and discussed.
      • Realize a short numerical project whose objectives are to: Formulate a well-posed design question, setup a well- or ill-posed problem susceptible to answer this question, implement the required solution algorithms, analyze the solutions, answer the question critically, and offer suggestions for improvement. The implementation will revolve around the FEniCS solver and Python scripting for most of the developments. After 7 weeks of work, the project will be defended in front of the class during a 15 minute presentation and a 15 minute discussion, where demonstration of the code and technical pedagogy will be expected.

Resources will be posted on this board as they become available to be shared amongst the class. The forum may also be used to ask questions of possible interest to all.
