Descriptif
Chemistry strongly benefits from technological advances that accelerate progress in the design and development of new compounds and materials, as well as in understanding their composition, properties, and behavior.
In this course, students undertake a guided research project that serves as a framework to explore both the scientific principles and technological aspects of advanced instrumentation routinely used in modern chemistry laboratories. Through this project, students gain hands-on experience with key analytical techniques.
These include methods for structural characterization of materials at the nanoscale (e.g., Scanning Electron Microscopy, Scanning Probe Microscopy) and at the macroscale (e.g., X-ray diffraction). A visit to the Synchrotron radiation facility Soleil may also be organized, providing exposure to state-of-the-art characterization tools.
Objectifs pédagogiques
Organize and apply collaboratively medium-level (master/graduate level) experimental procedures.
Independently identify, evaluate, and apply relevant scientific literature to support and guide the development of the project.
Identify and apply appropriate analytical techniques to address quantitative and qualitative analysis of a basic chemical structure (XRD, UV-Vis, AFM, SEM, TEM).
Critically analyze and interpret experimental results, and effectively communicate to an expert audience.

Programme détaillé
The course is structured around a combination of targeted lectures and project-based learning, with a flexible timeline adapted to the progression of each project.
The initial sessions consist of lectures introducing the theoretical foundations of the project, along with essential background on relevant analytical and experimental techniques. During this phase, the main objectives and scope of the project are defined.
Students are then expected to independently explore the scientific literature to identify and propose a project idea aligned with the course themes. These proposals are discussed collectively with the group and the instructor, allowing for refinement and validation.
Once a project is defined, students will carry out the project in a guided yet autonomous manner. The progression of the course is driven by the project itself, which determines the pace, sequence of activities, and selection of techniques. Experimental and analytical methods are introduced and applied as needed to address the evolving challenges of the project.
Throughout the course, regular discussions and feedback sessions support continuous development, ensuring both scientific rigor and skill acquisition
